WAI - Glowing Wings Chapter Celebrates Girls in Aviation Day 2025 - By Daisy BARRO
Women in Aviation International (WAI) - Glowing Wings Chapter recently celebrated its annual Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) 2025 with the theme "Breaking Limits - Journeying into Aviation". The event, held on September 17, 2025, at the NCAA Annex in Ikeja, Lagos, brought together women working in the Nigerian aviation sector and female students from Air Force Secondary School, Ikeja; Abesan Senior High School, Ipaja and Queens' College, Yaba for career talks and inspiration.
In her keynote address, Mrs. Evelyn Njoku, President of the WAI chapter and General Manager, Public Affairs at the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), shared her personal journey into aviation, encouraging the young girls to pursue their dreams without fear. "I stand here today not just as the president of Glowing Wings, but as somebody with dreams just like you, who grew up to become a woman in aviation," she said. "This is a vast industry, and every one of your dreams can find expression in aviation. It is your turn to rise without fear, but with focus, hard work and consistency. Girls, you're not the future - you're the present. The sky is the starting point and not the limit", she said.
Mrs. Amoge Okponyia, General Manager, Human Resources at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), represented by Helen Adekola, Deputy General Manager, Human Resources, FAAN, inspired the children by highlighting the innovative nature of the aviation industry. "Aviation is a field of innovation, where technology meets passion, and innovation drives progress," she said. "Today, we continue to write that story with each young girl who steps into a simulator, studies aircraft design or dares to imagine herself as an aviator in various capacities. To all the girls here today, your dreams are valid; your questions matter, and your future is as open as the sky", she noted.
The event featured a panel session with guest speakers, including Mrs. Kate Nnanna-Ibemgbo, Deputy General Manager of Air Traffic Management at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA); Mrs. Victoria Adegbe, CEO of Aviatrix Hub amongst others, who shared their experiences and journeys into aviation. A Q&A session followed, allowing the girls to express their excitement, motivations, and fears about joining the industry, and get guidance on the career paths they would like to pursue in the industry.
The aviation career day concluded with a tour of the facilities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, giving the children a glimpse into the inner workings of aviation and affording them the opportunity to better visualize the future by seeing female aviators in the field.
