United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has announced the signing of a landmark aircraft sale and purchase agreement with Southwest Airlines for the delivery of six (6) Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The acquisition marks a significant milestone in the airline's growth and expansion plans, enabling it to broaden its domestic, regional, and international operations.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft is renowned for its advanced technology and design enhancements, which improve performance, efficiency, and passenger comfort. With impressive fuel efficiency due to its advanced aerodynamics and efficient engines, the B737-800 significantly reduces operational costs and minimizes environmental impact. Its versatile range of approximately 2,935 nautical miles allows UNA to serve both short-haul and medium-haul routes effectively. The spacious cabin of the B737-800 enhances passenger comfort, featuring wider seats, larger overhead bins, and improved lighting. The aircraft can accommodate up to 189 passengers in a single-class configuration, providing a superior travel experience.
According to Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Executive Chairman of the airline, the acquisition will pave the way for a more profitable expansion and growth, enabling the carrier to operate new flights, lift more passengers and cargo at competitive fares, as well as provide efficient point-to-point travel. He commended the aircraft manufacturer and Southwest Airlines, saying: “We must put on record the strong support we have received from Boeing throughout the entire process and the promise for continued support to ensure a smooth entry into service and operation of the fleet. The excellent maintenance culture of Southwest Airlines, which is in line with United Nigeria Airlines’ culture, motivated us to make the acquisition. We are looking forward to continued collaboration with Southwest Airlines post-delivery in different areas such as training and maintenance support, among other areas", he noted.
UNA has also expressed interest in acquiring an additional four (4) Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft, bringing the total to ten (10), which will be inducted into the airline's fleet between the first quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027. Boeing's Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, congratulated United Nigeria Airlines on joining the 737 family, stating that the 737-800 will provide the airline with superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and high-value returns.
The acquisition was brokered in partnership with SkyWorks Holdings, LLC. Anders Hebrand, Chief Commercial Officer of SkyWorks Holdings, LLC, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, noting that the B737-800s have found a great home in the growing African aviation market.
