Nigeria's Airports Go Cashless: FAAN Introduces Digital Payment System - By Daisy BARRO
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step towards modernizing airport transactions and enhancing revenue collection with the launch of "Operation Go Cashless," a digital payment initiative in partnership with Paystack. This innovative solution introduces a cashless and contactless payment system across Nigerian airports, starting with Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In her statement to officially announce the rollout, FAAN's Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, represented by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, emphasized the transformative impact of this initiative. "Today, we're not just launching a payment system; we are fundamentally reshaping the experience at our airports, and reinforcing our unwavering commitment to accountability, transparency, and excellence." The FAAN MD highlighted the benefits of the initiative, including tripling revenue, reducing leakages, and increasing transparency through technology.
The cashless system boasts robust security features, including adherence to global security standards (PCIDSS), encryption and tokenization of card details, real-time fraud detection and monitoring, and 3D Secure 2.0 authentication layers. These advanced security measures ensure a secure and reliable payment experience. Passengers can obtain a FAAN Go Cashless Card at airport access gates in Lagos and Abuja, which can be activated and funded online via the Authority's website.
FAAN's Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Joy Asunbiade, outlined the implementation timeline, stating that cash transactions will be totally eradicated by the first quarter of next year. The rollout will be phased, covering airport gates gradually, with trained brand ambassadors deployed to assist passengers. Existing e-tags will remain valid, while passengers without e-tags can acquire a cashless card with a minimum load of ₦1,000, incurring a ₦500 charge.
Paystack's Director of Commercial and Public Sector, Mr. Fisayo Kolawole, who expressed optimism at the FAAN-Paystack partnership described the initiative as "truly remarkable," saying, "The future isn't coming. It's here already. Today, together with FAAN, we are launching this unique product. This is the first of its kind in all of Africa, and it's laying the foundation for a truly cashless Nigeria", he said.
