Carnival Calabar Warms Up With Kings & Queens Contest

The 2013
Carnival Celebrations of the annual Month-long Calabar Festival got off to an exhilarating
start with music and dance. The U. J Esuene Stadium, venue of the event, lit up
as the Ballet Dancers from Rwanda took to the stage and dazzled the crowd with
various traditional music and dance coupled by a carefully choreographed
display of synchronized drumming.

This was quickly
followed by the opening of the night’s star attraction featuring the contest
between the Carnival Kings and Queens of the various bands participating at
this year’s event. The contest was in two categories comprising of the Junior
and Senior Kings and Queens.
Five bands performed
on the night including Bayside Band; Freedom Band; Passion Band; Seagull Band
and Master Blaster Band. Each band in the various categories showcased exquisitely
designed carnival outfits each tastefully finished with bright and attractive
colours embracing different themes with their unique messages.

Another
impressive performance of the night was done by the Steel Drum Band from
Trinidad & Tobago who got the crowd singing and dancing frenetically as
they rendered various Nigerian and foreign songs done by renowned artistes like
Fela Anikulapo Kuti; Dbanj and Reggae Legend, Bob Marley.

Watching in
the audience was Governor Liyel Imoke and his amiable wife flanked by Senior
State Officials. Also present was the Honourable Minister for Culture &
Tourism, Chief Edem Duke as well as many high profile and specially invited
guests who attended in their droves with members of their families. The night’s
performance no doubt was impressive and it heralds the Cultural Parade, Junior
Carnival and the Senior Carnival which is the highpoint of the festival.
