Adefunke Adeyemi Embarks on Second Term as AFCAC SG - By Daisy BARRO
The African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) has announced the commencement of Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi's second term as Secretary General, effective September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2028. This development underscores her exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing Africa's aviation sector.
During her last tenure, AFCAC made significant strides in enhancing safety oversight, security compliance, and capacity development among member states. The Commission has also accelerated the operationalization of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), a flagship initiative aimed at liberalizing air transport across the continent.
"It is an honour to continue serving Africa and its people through aviation and AfCAC. We are committed to promoting safe, secure, sustainable, and connected air transport across Africa," Adeyemi stated, emphasizing her vision for a unified African aviation sector. "As we advance the full implementation of SAATM, strengthen aviation safety, security, air transport, and champion environmental sustainability, resilience, and inclusion, I remain deeply committed to contributing towards a unified Africa aviation", she said.
Under Adeyemi's leadership, AFCAC has strengthened partnerships with stakeholders, including the African Union Commission, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and industry players. The Commission has also advocated for equitable and inclusive policies, particularly on climate action, youth empowerment, and gender equity in aviation.
As Secretary General, Adeyemi's second term is expected to focus on reinforcing AFCAC's mandate and driving the African Union's Agenda 2063 goals for continental integration and sustainable development. With her extensive experience in aviation, having served as Regional Director of External Affairs & Sustainability for Africa at IATA, experts say she is well-positioned to lead AFCAC in achieving its objectives.
