FG Inaugurates FAAN Board Members; Charges Them to Prioritize Safety and Passenger Experience - By Daisy BARRO


The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards repositioning the Nigerian aviation sector for enhanced performance, safety, and global competitiveness with the inauguration of the newly appointed Board Members of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The ceremony, held at the Ministry's Headquarters in Abuja, was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FICArb (UK), on July 9, 2025.

In his inaugural address, Keyamo emphasized the importance of the Board's role in driving transformative change in the aviation sector. He highlighted four key areas of focus for the board, including strengthening safety and security measures across all Nigerian airports, promoting sustainable practices in aviation operations, enhancing passenger experience and quality of service, and encouraging strategic partnerships with both local and international stakeholders.

"The success of FAAN is not measured merely by financial growth but by its impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Our airports must become symbols of national pride—gateways that reflect our collective aspirations," Keyamo stated. He expressed confidence that the diversity of expertise and professional backgrounds represented on the Board would significantly contribute to the Ministry's broader vision of building a safe, efficient, and globally respected aviation industry.

The newly inaugurated members of the board include Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, CON, as Chairman, Engr. T.P. Vembe, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, and seven other members. The Board Members have pledged to work diligently within the provisions of the FAAN Act, prioritizing institutional governance and service delivery. Dr. Ganduje assured that the board will align its operations with international standards, recognizing Nigeria's position as a leading aviation player on the African continent: "We are fully conscious of our boundaries, and we will not exhibit mediocrity by neglecting our statutory duties. We must align our operations with international standards, as Nigeria is a leading aviation player on the African continent," he stated.

The Managing Director/CEO of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, expressed confidence that the board will drive measurable impact, improving passenger experience and strengthening institutional governance. She pledged collaboration with the Ministry and other stakeholders to enhance passenger experience, promising that Nigerians and visitors alike would soon witness significant improvements at the nation's airports. In her own words, "It will be a collaborative effort. I look forward to even stronger cooperation in subsequent board meetings", she said.
