ISAGO Aligns Safety Standards with ICAO Guidelines - By Daisy BARRO
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released the 10th edition of the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operators (ISAGO) Standards Manual. The Standards contained therein have been updated to align with guidelines issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
According to sources,
ISAGO is a comprehensive and well structured audit program for ground service
providers such as GSPs and ground handling companies operating at airports. Its
main objective is to improve ground safety by reducing the frequency of accidents/incidents.
To this end, reliable audit reports are made available to airlines to guide
them in their management of ground operation risks, and GSPs on the ISAGO
registry also benefit from a reduction in the number of audits required by
airports and independent airlines.
IATA’s Director Audit
Programs, Catalin Cotrut disclosed that in paralleling ISAGO Standards with
those of ICAO, IATA is showing support and solidarity for ICAO’s commitment to guarantee
the safety of all stakeholders involved in ground handling operations, and
wants to ensure these safety standards remain harmonized in the industry.
“Fully aligning the
ISAGO Standards with ICAO’s Manual on Ground Handling (ICAO Doc 10121) ensures
that GSPs on the ISAGO registry apply the same global best practices in ground
operations, and at the same level required of airlines and airports for the
management of safety,” Mr. Cotrut said.
The newly released
ISAGO Standards Manual includes, among others, requirements for passenger audit
and employee health – parameters which have been included because of the
changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is important to note
that more than 230 GSPs have been registered under ISAGO as of February 2021, and
about 300 GSP stations located at over 300 airports worldwide have already
undergone ISAGO audits.
