FAAN Commissions Domestic Cargo Wing in Lagos - By Daisy BARRO

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the country's cargo handling capabilities with the commissioning of its first-ever purpose-built domestic cargo wing in Lagos. The event marks a major milestone in Nigeria's aviation industry, with the facility set to improve efficiency, capacity, and logistics for businesses of all sizes.

According to Lekan Thomas, Director of Cargo Development & Services at FAAN, "Today is about more than just policies and aspirations - it is about tangible growth and new opportunities." Thomas highlighted the importance of the facility, citing statistics from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that Nigeria handled approximately 174,000 metric tonnes of air freight in 2023.

The Managing Director & Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has been instrumental in driving reforms and positioning Nigeria's aviation and cargo sectors for international competitiveness. Thomas praised her stewardship, stating that "under her dynamic leadership, we have witnessed a steadfast commitment to positioning Nigeria's aviation and cargo sectors for international competitiveness."

The domestic cargo wing is expected to reduce delays and streamline logistics, setting a new benchmark for efficiency and capacity in domestic cargo handling. Sources say FAAN plans to develop full-scale domestic cargo hubs at airports across the country which will become state-of-the-art centers for logistics excellence - setting new industry standards and accelerating Nigeria's aviation-driven economic growth.

In his remarks, Thomas emphasized FAAN's commitment to ensuring that the facility delivers unparalleled safe and efficient service: "Together, we are laying the foundation for a more prosperous and globally competitive Nigeria," he said.
