NAMA Prepares for Upcoming Airports; Revamps Air & Ground Communication Systems Nationwide - By Daisy BARRO

Nigerian Air Management Agency (NAMA) is working to improve air-ground communication at airports across the country to ensure that upcoming airports especially, are equiped to communicate according to industry best practices.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, the Acting Managing Director (MD) of NAMA, Mr. Matthiew Lawrence Pwajok said: "In the past, there were eight (08) satellite stations, but due to the fact that airports are coming up in Bayelsa, Anambra, Ekiti, Osun, Abeokuta and elsewhere, we have had to increase the number of satellite stations from eight (08) to fourteen (14), with some of them strategically installed in Benin, Enugu, Calabar, Jos, Kaduna, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Kano and Abuja to enhance communication between pilots and Air Traffic Controllers in the upper air space."

The NAMA chief went on to reveal that the Agency has completely overhauled all the Landing Systems in over ten (10) airports, replacing them with brand new Doppler VOR navigational gear:

"We have invested heavily in ground navigation by installing Doppler VOR in not less than ten (10) airports including Maiduguri, Enugu, Minna, Jos, Sokoto, Kano and Benin; and we are currently installing Category 3 ILS in Kano, Katsina and Port Harcourt. Satellite based navigation equipment have also been installed to serve as backup to the ground navigation systems", he said.

On his part, NAMA's Director of Operations, Mr. Jibrin Haske, urged airlines to take advantage of the various processes and procedures put in place by the Agency for the optimization of air traffic operations and for the safety of the Nigerian airspace.

In addition to ensuring safe skies, efficient communication and economy of flight, NAMA, under the aegis of Mr. Pwajok, has placed a premium on staff welfare through training, certifications and remuneration, as according to the NAMA boss, pensioners who have not been paid, some since 2018, have now received what is rightfully theirs. This, he said, was done "to ensure that these people are at peace and are happy with their families."
