The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently announced that Willie Walsh has taken over from Alexandre de Juniac as the Director General (DG) of the Association.
“I am
passionate about our industry and about the critical work that IATA does on
behalf of its members, never more so than during the COVID-19 crisis. IATA has
been at the forefront of efforts to restart global connectivity, including
developing the IATA Travel Pass”, Walsh said.
The new
IATA boss expressed his gratitude to his predecessor for “leaving behind a strong
organization and a motivated team.” He went further to say that his goal as the
new DG of IATA is to ensure that the Association is a “forceful voice
supporting the success of global air transport.”
According
to sources, Walsh is a seasoned aviation professional with a career in the
airline industry spanning forty years.
He began
his career in aviation as a cadet pilot at Aer Lingus in 1979 and was once the CEO of British Airways (2005 – 2011); CEO of
Aer Lingus (2001-2005). Prior to his recent appointment, Walsh was CEO of
International Airlines Group (IAG). He retired from IAG in September, 2020
where he had worked since the Group’s establishment in 2011.
Willie
Walsh was confirmed as the 8th DG of IATA at the Association’s 76th
Annual General Meeting on November 24, 2020.
