“Harmonize Pan-European Vaccination Certificate” – DE JUNIAC. By Daisy BARRO

The International Air
Transport Association (IATA) recently called on all the branches of the
European Union (EU) to implement a proposal advanced by the Greek Prime Minister
Kyriakos Mitsotakis regarding the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 in
Europe. The proposal suggests the creation and utilization of a common digital
European COVID-19 vaccination certificate that will serve to facilitate
intra-European movement for those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
IATA’s Director General
and CEO Alexandre de Juniac voiced his support of the proposal in an open letter
to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in which he
also copied key policy-makers across the EU.
In his letter, de
Juniac suggested that EU member states should develop a policy capable of regenerating
much needed social and economic benefits for Europe, and which will ultimately
lead to freedom of movement for those who have already been vaccinated against
COVID-19.
“Prime Minister
Mitsotakis’ initiative should be urgently adopted by the Commission and all member
states. Vaccination is a fundamental key to safely reopening borders and
stimulating economic recovery. A pan-European mutually recognized vaccination
certificate would be an important step towards giving governments the
confidence to safely open their boarders, and passengers the confidence to fly
without the barrier of quarantine”, said de Juniac.
IATA’s DG went on to
say that a harmonized vaccination certificate could contribute “to the
re-establishment of mobility on a global scale, which is the foundation for
re-establishing economic activity to pre-crisis levels.”
This comes as testing
capacities for COVID-19 improve and many more people get vaccinated.
Governments are therefore preparing to re-engage freedom of movement through proper
planning and coordination while possibly engaging in new vaccination and
testing capabilities.
