N20 Million, 10 Years: United Nigeria Airlines Guarantees Future of ANA’s Achebe Prize - By Daisy BARRO

United Nigeria Airlines has entered a 10-year sponsorship agreement with the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) to fund the annual Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction. The carrier will disburse N2 million annually, totaling N20 million over the duration of the commitment.

The agreement was disclosed by the airline’s Executive Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, following consultations with the President, Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Dr. Usman Akanbi. The partnership is designed to provide financial stability to the award, which was launched in 2021 by the Anambra State Government in collaboration with ANA.

According to the association, the long-term funding framework will ensure continuity of the prize irrespective of fluctuations in government subventions. The award encountered budgetary constraints in the past three (3) years after the current Anambra administration discontinued its financial support.

According to sources, the Obiano administration initiated the prize with a N1 million grant. The succeeding Soludo administration maintained the grant and, in 2022, acceded to ANA’s request to increase it to N2 million to accommodate inflation and adjudication expenses. However, correspondence from the organizers indicating further commitment received no response, prompting the airline’s intervention.

Announcing the carrier’s decision, Dr. Akanbi quoted Prof. Okonkwo: "Prof Achebe is too precious in our consciousness for the award to continue to suffer the current epileptic funding", he said.

Elaborating on the rationale for the move, the airline boss linked the sponsorship to cultural stewardship and brand positioning: "Very few men and women of letters and culture in recent history have brought as much attention and honour to the black race and the African world as the great Achebe through his writings, lectures, speeches, intellectual activism, ethical conduct, and intermittent interventions in political affairs, and this has made him an authentic conscience for the Nigerian people", he opined.

Dr. Akanbi, a senior academic at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, responded to the announcement: "We are immensely grateful to Prof. Okonkwo and his airline for their patriotic intervention. Prof. was not just a world-class raconteur and essayist, but also the ANA founder who started our association in 1981 at the University of Nigeria at Nsukka and accepted to serve as its first president, thus giving it the credibility and platform that has made the association highly respected beyond Nigeria's shores", he noted.

The ANA President further revealed the CEO’s prior contributions to preserving Achebe’s legacy. The airline executive, he said, solely financed the statue of the late author unveiled in July 2026 by Governor Chukwuma Soludo at Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North LGA; Achebe’s hometown.

The prize endowment complements United Nigeria Airlines’ existing tributes to the literary icon. In June 2026, the carrier named one of its two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after Prof. Chinua Achebe, while the second was designated in honour of His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

For aviation stakeholders, the initiative represents a corporate social investment that aligns brand equity with cultural capital. The development equally underwrites a decade of literary recognition, as United Nigeria Airlines positions itself within a niche of legacy-driven Corporate Social Responsibility, while leveraging association with a globally recognized Nigerian figure to strengthen its domestic brand equity.
