ATSSSAN Pledges Seamless Industry Operations, Commends Nahco Management - By Daisy BARRO
The Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) has pledged to support seamless operations in the aviation sector, urging management of government agencies and companies to engage in collaborative discussions with workers' unions.
During a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), ATSSSAN President, John Ogbe, commended NAHCO's policies on staff welfare, saying, "When there are issues, we are open to discussions, we also want you to trust our local branches, we trust them to deal with management. They are not here to truncate or disrupt businesses." He added that the union is committed to supporting businesses and understands the importance of Nahco's services to the survival of other service providers.
He went on to emphasize the importance of partnership between management and unions, stating, "We are your social partners, so the apprehension that unions always come for disruptions will not suffice when there's adequate collaborations between the unions and companies in the industry."
Ogbe urged better welfare conditions for staff, citing the global economic crunch and the erosion of the country's currency value. He stated, "We want to support businesses. Our stand basically is very collaborative. As senior management staff, we try to understand with management why recruiting our workers first. We understand too that we cannot over-unionise the system thereby killing the business."
NAHCO's Group Executive Director, Corporate Services, Dr. Peter Olusola Obabori, disclosed that the management has scheduled a meeting with unions to discuss staff welfare for April 1, 2026. He affirmed that the company is a fair organisation in terms of wages and treatments of staff, and is pushing for more benefits. Obabori highlighted various incentives, including performance-based bonuses, profits, and shares for staff, and stated that the ground handler is taking measures to mitigate the impact of the global economic turmoil on staff.
Obabori also disclosed that Nahco has acquired equipment worth over $20 million to enhance staff working conditions, leading to growth in revenue and profit. He advised staff to take advantage of the company's policy allowing them to become co-share owners, citing the significant increase in share value from N4 to N170.
